Mini Mites Hockey
About Mini Mites Hockey
LCA Mini Mites Hockey is one of the most popular beginner hockey programs in Regina. Geared for 5-6 year olds, the program is a fun way to learn the basic skills of Canada’s biggest sport.
Prerequisites
Your child needs to be at least 5 years old and no older than 6 years old by September of the current year.
Mini Mites players should have basic skating skills. Nothing fancy, but our instructors will be more focused on helping the kids deal with skating with all the gear rather than learning to skate. LCA offers a great Learn to Skate program for kids just getting started on the ice.
All players need full hockey gear including a stick, helmet with cage/full face shield and a throat guard. Jerseys are supplied.
2009-2010 PROGRAM DETAILS

Program Overview
The hockey program runs for 10 weeks in the fall and 10 weeks in the winter, all at the same time each week (which our parents find very nice indeed!)
Kids are given a black or white LCA jersey on Week 1 to help form loose teams.
Each hour long session is split into a 30-40 minute warmup and skill session then a 20 minute half ice game. Once in a while we’ll play full ice with the clock since the kids think that’s pretty fun.
We don’t keep score. We don’t worry too much about lines, goalies or even nets, really. It’s all about having fun, learning some things and goofing around on the ice.
Helpful Tips
- Inexpensive gear is available at the Sports Exchange. Canadian Tire also offers a ‘kit in a bag’ setup which is just fine for the smaller kids
- If you’re looking for more of a hard-core hockey experience for your child, Hockey Regina offers an Initiation League for 5-6 year olds. However, we’ve had many Mini Mites graduates move into the Hockey Regina Novice league at age 7 with success.
Helping Out
Mini Mites is 100% volunteer run, usually by the parents who have kids in the program. If you’re able to help out, bring a stick and skates and check in with Phil at the rink!
