Grandmothers 4 Grandmothers

Grandmothers 4 Grandmothers… what does this make you think of?  Read on and see if you can help.

Though awareness of the AIDS pandemic in Africa is increasing, it is still shocking to read that an estimated 18 to 20 million African children will be orphaned because of this virus.  Imagine the social crisis and the impact on already devastated families.  In particular, it is the African grandmothers who are impacted and left to carry the burden.  As first-hand witnesses to the horror of the AIDS virus, these women are not only helplessly watching their own children suffer and perish, they are also taking on overwhelming responsibilities as primary caregivers for their orphaned grandchildren.  Many of these women, often suffering unimaginable hardships, are single handedly caring for as many as ten to fifteen children with no support and limited resources.

In response to this crisis, a group of Regina and area woman have formed Grandmothers 4 Grandmothers.  In 2006, G4G Regina was formed and by 2009, they received the YWCA Women of Distinction Teamwork Award!  Their membership is growing and through their efforts, tens of thousands of dollars have been raised to support the grandmothers of Africa.  G4G Regina’s efforts help to support the Stephen Lewis Foundation (http://www.stephenlewisfoundation.org/) which provides direct assistance to grassroots organizations in Africa. Half a world away, this group of Regina grandmothers are making a difference and you can too!

G4G Regina is holding their 4th Annual African Evening Fundraising dinner – a great meal for a great cause.  Tickets are available at Ten Thousand Villages and Bach and Beyond.  See the poster below for more information or call 781-2946.
